Brad Jefford

Brad Jefford is a name assimilated with jazz and creative music in St. John’s, NL. Jefford is a guitarist, composer, and improviser whose work has been featured at numerous festivals, concerts, and workshops throughout the east coast of Canada. He was bitten by the jazz bug at an early age and was very much drawn to the improvisations that dominated this musical language. This interest led him to pursue Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies and subsequently travel to study the under some of the world’s most notable guitarists and educators, including Mick Goodrick.

The Brad Jefford Trio+ takes a creative approach to ensemble playing with a focus on occupying the world between composition and free improvisation. The Trio+ has featured St. John’s finest rhythm section players and improvisers and always provides an exciting experience for both the performers and audience members.

Jefford is constantly looking to push his musical ventures in new directions, fusing his approach to the guitar with many styles and genres of music. As a recording artist Jefford’s guitar sound can be heard on his debut recording with Brad Jefford Trio+ “Ageless”.  This self-produced and recorded album received a nomination for Jazz/Blues Recording of the Year at the 2011 MusicNL Awards. His sound as an improviser is featured heavily on Curtis Andrews’ “The Offering of Curtis Andrews”, an album that won the 2009 Scope Atlantis Prize for Best Album of the Year. Jefford was awarded the CBC Galaxie Rising Star Award for his work at the Ottawa Jazz Festival in 2007. His identifiable guitar sound can be heard with Jazz East Big Band, Havana to Canada, the Skylarks, Spirit of Newfoundland and various other projects in and around St. John’s.

With a strong interest in community and cultural development Jefford uses his expertise and experience to give back to the musical community. He is the founder of the “Wreckhouse TD Jazz Jam”, a weekly jazz concert and improvisation session that aims to unify St. John’s creative music community.  Hosted by the Brad Jefford Trio+, the band invites local musicians, students, and improvisers to come join them on stage to create music in a supportive environment.

In addition to his performing schedule Jefford keeps a busy schedule as a musical educator and mentor in the community. He has worked with many professional musicians in St. John’s and continues to mentor the younger generation through his lesson studio and as a facilitator at the Young Folk at the Hall and the NL Folk Arts Society.
