Flat Top Funk is a world where traditions collide and become contemporary. Traditional melodies from Newfoundland and Ireland meet grooves from New Orleans. Originally both of these traditions were both all about dancing! In Newfoundland melodies were strung together in sets to keep the dancers going at the kitchen party. In New Orleans, the rhythm of the Caribbean fused with the rhythm of the African Americans to give birth to jazz, funk, and many other forms of dance music. I guess that makes Flat Top Funk a dance band, but when these musicians open their hearts they explore a sonic world where both the dance floor and the fixed listener can relish in the soundscape.

Flat Top Funk is a collective that draws players from both the improvised and traditional music scenes in St. John’s, Newfoundland. It is the brainchild of guitarist, composer, arranger, and improviser, Brad Jefford
